WHEN GUESTS NEED GROUNDING IN OVERWHELMING SPACES
——
Shadow Lily
The story: Created in my studio during a period of intense focus on light manipulation and shadow play. This was captured during a contemplative evening session where I was exploring how controlled lighting could transform familiar subjects into something transcendent. The emotional state was one of quiet discovery—finding beauty in the interplay between presence and absence, light and shadow.
The methodology: Functions as a visual anchor through its dramatic contrast and centered composition. The golden calla lilies emerge from pure black, creating a focal point that naturally draws and holds attention without overwhelming the viewer. The symmetrical arrangement provides stability while the organic forms maintain softness, making it ideal for spaces where guests might feel overstimulated.
Space application: Perfect for hotel lobbies with high ceilings and busy foot traffic, upscale restaurant waiting areas, or spa reception zones. The warm golden tones complement brass fixtures and rich wood finishes while the black background allows it to integrate seamlessly with any color palette. Particularly effective in spaces with multiple conversation areas where a unifying visual element is needed.
Technical considerations:
- Optimal sizes: 40″x30″ for standard walls, 60″x40″ for statement installations
- Placement: Eye level (57-60″ to center), minimum 8 feet viewing distance
- Lighting: Requires controlled ambient lighting; avoid direct spotlighting which will compete with the image’s internal drama
- Works best with warm white LED (3000K) to enhance the golden tones
