Spoken word found me at a time in my life when my writing reached a certain…plateau in the eyes of shifting public interests. The rate of my output (which was rigorous) did not translate well to my community, whom I exhausted in short order. Very few of them were artists – most importantly, artists with time to spare to constantly critique written works.
So how could I reach more people and still honor my creative instincts?
Taken to its performative extension, poetry takes on the form of spoken word: story, illustration, education, experience-as-exhibition wrapped up in the skin of a living tome – a person. I became my stories in real time in an effort to share those stories that previously existed only on paper. Economical, visceral, sensory, I found this modality easily adaptable to fit my style.
